    She wrote recently, "Crimea will always be Ukrainian, despite all the attempts of Russian occupants. This is our land and we won't give it away to anyone!"

    I don't know what she means by "always," but it must be a fairly limited definition. Until 1783 Crimea (and a good part of what is now Ukraine proper) was part of the Ottoman Empire; then Catherine the Great seized it from the Turks; etc. etc.

    So Crimea has "always" been Ukrainian only in the same limited and disingenuous sense that Texas has "always" been part of the United States rather than Mexico (or Spain), and Alaska has "always" been part of the United States rather than Russia, or Canada for that matter.
