  •  And on immigration (7+ / 0-)

The GOP is in real trouble.  Most of the leadership, including Boehner and McConnell, understand that comprehensive immigration reform has to take place, but they can't let this administration get credit for it. So they are stuck in a bind, waiting for the extremism to abate a bit and hoping for control of the senate in 2014. Boehner at least would probably welcome a Bush III presidency - the two are pretty similar.  But it does look like the immigration issue is so toxic and the base so racist, that the plan of waiting until they can take credit, or until 2016, might not hold.  I don't know how immigration will play out, but it does seem like a pivotal issue for both parties.  The GOP has always been able to count on party discipline, but the haters are hating and the party is not as unified or capable of developing and pursuing an agenda.
