    slapdown of Louis Napoleon. 18th Brumaire is the date of the coup which brought Napoleon Bonaparte to power. The very first sentence of the work shows Marx's scathing opinion of Louis Napoleon (who later became Emperor Napoleon III:)
       "Hegel remarks somewhere[*] that all great world-historic facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce."
