a nature nut, and I think everybody knows we are harmless. (although I won't forget the time I was taking pics of an eagle in a tree above a house and somebody came out of the house demanding to know why I was videoing  them...be careful where you aim the camera! they weren't island people of course, were gone in a month or two)

It's also an automatic introduction. Like the gal who saw my camera that time and told me about the dozen Harlequin ducks the next bay over.

Sometimes here at BYS we assume a basic level of knowledge, and it can be a surprise when people ask us what seems really obvious stuff, like a seagull or an eagle. Worth having to talk to a stranger if it enlarges someone's awareness of nature even a tiny bit. Outreach.

I was talking with a guy on the walk today, a smart educated guy, who was totally unaware of why the meadow out there is getting grown over with rose bushes and trees. Said he's heard someone suggest sheep run out there to clear it. Had no knowledge at all of the Indians burning it for hundreds of years to keep it open, and how settlers bringing sheep in there had brought in horrible invasive grasses with their sheep. You never know what people's assumptions are until they articulate them with questions.
