    3) Orthodoxy.  There's an old saying that "nobody pays attention to electoral candidates until after Labor Day".  Maybe it's true.  I spent 5 hours doing voter registration in a mall in May and signed up 4 voters.  I spent 2 hours at a restaurant in October and signed up 80.  IMHO, candidates should run biographical ads at a low level for the entire 5-6 months ahead of the election.  It doesn't have to be a big buy.  Even $1000 buys a lot of ratings points.  Start early, and it might be easier to build a solid organization than if you're trying to identify volunteers in September.  Doing everything at the last minute is certainly harder than planning.
