  •  My plants must be different. I'd say maybe (18+ / 0-)

2-3 gallons every 4 days unless it's really hot.  But that's with no waste.

    •  I wish I were as bold as you, Big Al (4+ / 0-)

I like to garden, and the very occasional weed-infused brownie or cookie would be a simple pleasure I would enjoy without harm to myself or anyone else.  I don't even like to drink!  But I don't want to break the law and don't want to risk the consequences.  It does, however, piss me off that I can't simply grow a little for personal private consumption.

And it's ironic too, because nobody freaks out when people grow morning glory vines (seeds are a powerful hallucinogen), and it's not technically illegal to grow poppies as long as you don't harvest the sap. That's right... Papaver somniferum the very same species that produces opium, has been cultivated for 150 years as an ornamental in parts of the US. It's growing it with intent, or harvesting, that will get you in trouble.  I saw some growing at the Art Institute of Chicago.  Just for fun, I scored the pods - to see if anyone would bust the board of directors of one of Chicago's great cultural landmarks.

It all goes to show how insane all this is.
