    where wine, the symbol of joy, is spilled when recounting the plagues against the Egyptians, to express that we don't take pleasure in the suffering of others, even when the actions that created that suffering our done by God, and for our benefit. There are other parts of the traditional service that contradict this sentiment. I likewise rejected the religion, in part because I couldn't continue to support a framework based on what I didn't believe in, and because of the internal contradictions. But religious scholars throughout history have recognized these contradictions, and the passages that seem to contradict our espoused values, and have had various ways of dealing with them.
