  •  It would really be nice... (8+ / 0-)

...if theists would stop telling atheists what atheism is as if we're too stupid to know ourselves. You sound like a straight person telling a gay person what being gay is or a man telling a woman what being a woman is.

No one has to prove the non-existence of something; if we did, we'd be paralyzed trying to prove the non-existence of everything. Prove I don't have a unicorn! You can't prove I don't have one, so I must have one? That's not how logic and proof works. If I say I have a unicorn, I have to prove that I do; I don't have one until you prove I don't. Similarly, I don't have to prove God doesn't exist. If you say God exists, you have to prove he does.

Once again, "I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours." -- Stephen F Roberts

    •  If you'll look again, I didn't say atheism (0+ / 0-)

requires proof. I said, without proof, it's a belief (rather than a fact). So is your distinction (like bgodfrey), that you don't believe in the existence of God, but at the same time, you don't deny it? That sounds to me like you're just not sure. Richard Dawkins has said unequivocally in interviews that God doesn't exist. Apparently then, not all atheists agree on the matter of God's existence?

I never liked you and I always will.

The last debate I saw with him (with Rowan Williams) had the newspapers crowing "Dawkins is an Agnostic" for paraphrasing is own best-selling work that's been in print for years. So the statement that he stated unequivocally a position on the non-existence of god rather than the reasonableness of disbelief (in contradiction to his previous statements and work) needs to be supported.

If you're unaware of the diversity of atheist thought as expressed by diverse people in diverse schools of philosophy in diverse cultures over the entirety of recorded history, then you don't get to talk about atheism.
        •  Sure, I do. Would you make the same requirement (1+ / 0-)

of those who have commented here on Christianity? That they be fully aware of the diversity of Christian thought as expressed in diverse schools of philosophy/theology in diverse cultures over the entirety of recorded history? That would eliminate every atheist from the discussion and most theology professors!

many other atheists, "Show me God, I'll believe".

It's the same thing we have to say about unicorns, perpetual motion machines, and reasonable intelligent registered Republicans post-1980.

Dear Boomers: The dirty Rooskies aren't coming to get you. Breath in sanity through your mouth, breath out the Cold War propaganda through your nose.
