    got something they're clueless about: a prejudice toward some group, or flippant word choices that are hurtful to someone.

    I'm 52 and I'm still learning. BoiseBlue wrote a beautiful diary titled "Teeth," about her lifelong problem with severe tooth decay and tooth loss.  She lamented the fact that we judge people based on the condition of their teeth. In one of her followup comments, she indicated that progressives here at Kos have made the mistake of associating backwards-thinking people with bad teeth. It was at that moment that I realized, to my shame, I was guilty of making such wisecracks.

    It's great if we can put ourselves in someone else's shoes without having to be educated. But that's not always how it works. Sometimes we don't really gain enlightenment until we come face to face with someone who makes it real for us.

    Perhaps for Vanessa and Tamara, you're that first person who makes gays and bi-sexuals "real" for them. And that's not a bad thing.
