I just spent the last 2 hours doing the math for this post.

... the sun's travel with respect to what?

think about , do the math for total distance traveled in a year .

... the sun's travel with respect to what?
Something not moving .
The earth spins , it rotates around the sun , the sun is moving , it spins around the galaxy , the galaxy rotates , the galaxy is moving ...

maybe next time.

my brain hurts right now.

note to self:  translate total miles per hour, into total miles traveled, in "one Earth Year."

self:

taking the metric 1,949,548 mi/hr (4 combined speeds)

1,949,548
* 24
46,789,152
* 365.25
17,089,737,768 Miles -- Total distance traveled in 1 earth year

(ie.  17+ Billion Miles)

there are multiple ways to measure ,
cumulative vs straight line .
If you want to do all the possible answers ,
good on you .

in tonite's post.

Think I'll listen to a few tunes,

It's time for chillin, in the solar breeze.

you could use the speed of the sun around the galactic center, though, as a first approximation.

moving ?
Is it moving in a straight line ?

what exactly the cosmologists mean when they say the universe is expanding. The standard explanation is that "there is no center" to the expansion, but I find this explanation ... wanting. We can measure the things that are moving most swiftly away from ourselves, but from the standard description they aren't moving away from us through space ... rather space is expanding between us and them. So in some odd sense ... the galaxy isn't really moving at all. Or something.

As far as I know, our galaxy is not rotating around anything, it is just becoming farther and farther away from the things around it, as the space between everything expands. But what does that really mean? What divides the things that are moving apart from each other because space is expanding, from things that are moving through space? The space between the moon and the earth doesn't appear to be expanding, nor does the space between the sun and the earth. So WTF?

Again, I find the explanations wanting.

they get a handle on Dark Matter and Dark Energy,

the Universal "scaffolding" aka the Universal Filaments upon which Galaxies are gathering (clustering)

will probably leave a lot of unanswered questions.

the galaxy isn't really moving at all.
Then don't add in its non movement . But if you are one of those who thinks it is moving re the others that are moving away , then add that in .
It's all just for fun , it doesn't change anything on earth that matters , babies will be born , old folks will die , etc etc etc
