what exactly the cosmologists mean when they say the universe is expanding. The standard explanation is that "there is no center" to the expansion, but I find this explanation ... wanting. We can measure the things that are moving most swiftly away from ourselves, but from the standard description they aren't moving away from us through space ... rather space is expanding between us and them. So in some odd sense ... the galaxy isn't really moving at all. Or something.

As far as I know, our galaxy is not rotating around anything, it is just becoming farther and farther away from the things around it, as the space between everything expands. But what does that really mean? What divides the things that are moving apart from each other because space is expanding, from things that are moving through space? The space between the moon and the earth doesn't appear to be expanding, nor does the space between the sun and the earth. So WTF?

Again, I find the explanations wanting.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
