  •  It's a question of significant digits. (1+ / 0-)

How many significant digits does the time machine driver need to get back to exactly where we were five minutes ago?

You could end up in rock, or poised to take a hard fall, I suppose.  Or in cold space, or in the ocean, or in the mantle of the earth. Or in New Jersey.

You calculate we are traveling at 872 km per sec, which works out to 261600 km in five minutes. Your value is good to about 50 km (considering the significant digits appear to be in the hundreds), works out to about 31 miles (31.06856 miles) of uncertainty.  I'd want to know to the millimeter before I took the ride.
