  •  A typical housecat (none)
A typical outdoor housecat kills more birds per year than a typical modern windfarm using the new modern windmills with slower turbines. (Not surprisingly, keeping cats indoors reduces bird kills AND extends the cats' lives.)

The Altamont Pass windfarm is particularly tragic, because not only is the design of those mills such that it is inherently deadly to birds, but the windfarm is also located smack in the middle of a major migration route. The two factors have combined to create a horrible situation, resulting in extraordinary damage to bird populations.

Beware the everyday brutality of the averted gaze.
