  •  In 1962 (11+ / 0-)

I worked as a temp for Kelly Manpower. I made $5.00 an hour with benefits because I always worked 40 hours a week. I got a bonus at the end of the year which was calculated from what I had brought in for the year. My ex was in law school and in 1962, $5.00 paid for a lot of groceries, gas, utilities, etc. The bonus bought all the Christmas gifts and then more.

    I'm thrilled with Wendy's.

    •  You were very well paid! (13+ / 0-)
What cost $5 in 1962 would cost $38.00 in 2013.

Minimum wage then was $1.15 (equal to $8.73 today)

You've blown me away with the statistics. Wow! Thanks for that link because I am sending it to my grandchildren. They don't know about  the period  while their grandfather went to law school.

I remember buying a candy bar and RC Cola for a dime. I noticed that a bar of candy was $1.25 at a convenience store last week.  I bought a soda and it was $1.25.

The summer I went away to university. I made $1.65 an hour working in the mail room in an insurance company. I moved to Dallas and living in a boarding house. $50.00 a month got me two good meals, a nice room, a swimming pool and my laundry done! 2 blocks off the bus route.

When I that temp job I was very grateful to the typing teacher that I couldn't stand in high school. He would stand behind me and it always annoyed me so I typed faster to get him to walk off. :) That is what got me that $5.00 an hour. We were RICH! We paid $.25 a day for parking.

    •  the neighborhood grocery store used to deliver (7+ / 0-)

if you bought $5 worth of groceries.

      free delivery.

because $5 worth of groceries was too much to carry home.

the minimum wage was $1.25 an hour then, so $5 was four hours' worth of groceries.

Now I can put $5 worth of groceries in a small plastic bag around my wrist

      •  Groceries are so expensive (5+ / 0-)

now. I have a garden and chickens.  ..$5 worth in a bag around your wrist! I used to drink a lot of orange juice, but no more. There are things that I cannot justify buying. The saving grace is my being a vegetarian. :)  I saw that  a whole chicken cost $12 last week.
