    When I canvassed for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in the early '80's in suburban Chicago, I learned that few voters could identify their state representative or state legislator.  This isn't peculiar to my area.  It is typical and is what enables them to pass laws under the radar and to get elected by appealing to prejudice.

    I can understand the hurt feelings when one's state is singled out, but Rachel Maddow is one of a handful of journalists actually providing national coverage of state activities.  Daily Kos does also.  

    Texas is feeling the heat because of the lack of concern for the environment and the health of its citizens.  When I ask why the voters elect these guys, the rationale I get is either: 1) they don't really mean it; or 2) the courts will protect us.  My reply:  They mean it, and no, the courts won't protect you.
