Putin forcefully denied he'd activated Russian troops in Crimea, arguing that the photos of camo-clad Russian troops were fakes and provocations because (and I'm not making this up) "anyone could buy those uniforms in a store".  Last week on Pryamaya Liniya he admitted they were indeed Russian troops, but that he was downplaying their participation because he wanted to ensure the security of the referendum.

To the diarist: overconfidence is not a virtue in a situation like this, so if you're finding things to be obvious to you, you may benefit from taking a step back. (Ditto the NYTimes.)  Just because the West has made hay out of Putin's actions before doesn't mean that that hay is baseless, as the Crimean troop issue showed.

once you're in a situation in which news reports that support your narrative are the only ones worth reading, I can see how the whole "WE ARE NOT IN CRIMEA WESTERN LIARS oh ha yes we were the whole time" thing might just sort of slip on by.

That doesn't necessarily mean there are Russian forces in Eastern Ukraine, but I'd say it's one good reason among several to think that it's pretty darn likely that there are Russian forces in Eastern Ukraine.
