    •  Thanks. You probably only beat me by a few hrs (7+ / 0-)

Looking at that date, Jan 3, 2009, I realize I must have been reading this site for years before signing up in the glow of the post-2008 election.

I do get a bit riled up at gross dismissals of huge parts off the country with many millions of people.  The Left is very vulnerable to this attitude, and it feeds the perception of "elitism" that turns off many Americans.

I know I am fortunate to live in a part of GA where I don't have to reach for a barf bag when talk turns to politics at a neighborhood picnic, but many of our allies do, and they shouldn't be demeaned for living in the "wrong" part of the country.

      •  GA voted 47% for Obama: worth reminding us! (4+ / 0-)

Thanks for that helpful reality check. For those of us who don't live in the South, it's easy to forget and to cast wide generalizations. Mea culpa. Agreed, these are not helpful.

Even in 2012, Obama won 45% of the vote in Georgia. 9 of every 20 voters chose Obama, 11 didn't.

      •  Thank You. Someone messaged me in outrage (0+ / 0-)

because I clicked like on a comment noting that Nevada is not in the deep South.  The guy who was outraged at me had indicated that racist Nevada rancher Bundy seemed to think he lived in the 'deep shit south'.   Fifteen people recommended this view.  This attitude about the South is too common for me to get really upset, but it is insulting and tiresome.

I would never have worded a comment as strongly as the one where I clicked recommended, but nasty comments deriding large groups of people do get old.  I would have ignored the message, but this issue affects elections.  Here is my answer to the hostile message earlier this evening:

The problem with your comment was a matter of regionalism. Samanthab may have been bothered by the perception that you believe African American people in the South do not stand up for themselves.

I was also bothered by the perception that you feel all white people currently living in the South are racists just as Bundy is. Look at photos of some of the Moral Monday protests in North Carolina and similar protests. Coalitions of reasonable whites and minority groups could change some states below the Mason-Dixon line into blue states. Suggestions that southern whites are all bigots encourages them to vote for Republicans. It was Southern Democrats who ran the Jim Crow system.
