I was aware in general of Thoreau's observations and how they've been used as an important phenological contribution.  You've added some very interesting details.

Most important is the idea of citizen science, whether it's rainfall measurements entered through CoCoRaHS, times of leaf emergence or flowering or fruiting, or even the emergence and seasonal activity of box turtles (which I do).  The National Phenology Network is one site that compiles observations.

Anyone can do this, and the more, the better.
