  •  There is a black woman repub in my senior bldg. (8+ / 0-)

She recently said "blacks were better off under Jim Crow." She did not say this in my presence but she did spew some homophobic junk in my face and I told her what I thought of her thoughts so she rather avoids me these days.

When I was told this I said I wondered if Emmet Till would have agreed with her - I so yearn to ask her directly.

    •  there is an organic black conservatism (8+ / 0-)

That does believe in "good old days" when blacks owned land and businesses, valued education, embraced "family values", etc.  They're very much torn between obvious white racism on the right and the perceived defense of the ghetto on the left.

Domestic politics is the continuation of civil war by other means.

She lived through Jim Crow.  What she actually longs for is segregation.  She does not want to live around, socialize with, etc white people.  She can't tolerate the "little" slights and disrespect that comes with integration.

She thinks it was better when black people were left alone.  At one of the reunions she went on and on about how black people today act like fools and coon because they lack pride in themselves due to having to deal with white folks putting them down everyday.  If black folks just kept to themselves and stopped trying to get white folks to like them it would be better.

I think she's not looking at the big picture, and is probably traumatized by her life experiences.  But, I can't ignore the tiny kernel of truth in her thought process...that bigotry and racism are damaging not just financially, but psychologically as well.
