  •  I don't know... (4+ / 0-)

the people who moved into that house have been doing major repair - but the tree is at the back of their yard.  It's been dying for many years now - and the last few bad storms really just did it in.  If anything, I hope they don't cut it down if it's housing a nest!!!

    •  For sure!! I breaks my heart when people (3+ / 0-)

cut down trees or do major pruning at this time of year. Babies are in nests for cryin out loud. Are you on good terms with these new neighbors, for that kind of convo?

      •  No... (3+ / 0-)

        :-(

But then again, since it's at the back part of their yard, perhaps they're not in a rush to take it down.  Of course if I were them, I'd just make sure to do it before the next winter.  We get fierce nor'easters.

        •  Oh... And cost may be (3+ / 0-)

Prohibiting them for now.  A tree that size probably will be about a grand to take out!

          •  If it's far enough from the house and (3+ / 0-)

unlikely to fall on it, the tree may be low priority. Cost is def an issue, especially if they're doing a lot of other work. Fingers crossed.

It could fall on the garage, though, but definitely not close enough to the house to do any real damage.

The tree has been 75% dead for a good long time, and now I'm pretty certain it's fully dead - at least from what I can see at the top.  It could be suckers at the bottom are growing that I can't see.

It's like one of the last of the really old maples in the area.  The two in front of my house died long ago and had to be cut down.  The street was once lined with really old maples.  As they started to die, they weren't replaced.

Now the town is replanting trees along the street, but because of the power lines, are growing only the smaller ornamental type trees (like those that only grow 20 feet high max)  I got one free tree (homeowners had to ask) and got a hawthorne tree.  It's got a very pretty flower!  And bees really love it.  :)
