is built into the system. Why, I don't know, but it's just a cost of doing business, like lights or heat.

I'm living in America, and in America you're on your own. America's not a country. It's just a business.

of studies showing that workers who have a higher standard of living are happier in their jobs and turnover is lower...and b/c everyone has more money to spend, all local businesses do better.

I am thinking in particular of a study done comparing (iirc) an Oregon county with another county just across the state line in I think Idaho -- don't remember.

The economy of the county in Oregon did better after it raised its minimum wage, compared to the county in the state that kept the lower minimum wage. In fact, I think b/c the raise was statewide, it boosted all of Oregon's economy, not just the specific county being studied.

The point of studying the two counties closely was that you've got two similar economies & one raises pay & the other doesn't: what happens?

A rising tide lifts all boats, that's what happens.

Hell, this shit isn't even counter-intuitive except, apparently, to the Know-Nothings of the GOP.

      •  The corporation doesn't care about the happiness (0+ / 0-)

of the workers or the local economy.

        •  They should care (0+ / 0-)

about the workers (I agree that most don't) b/c happier workers are more productive and the turnover rate is lower. And there are costs included in having to train new workers all the time...not to mention lost productivity everytime someone new is hired. I see it all the time at work.

And they should care about the local economy b/c that's their base: screw the economy and nobody has the money to buy your goods.
