  •  Thanks for the background. Here's my question: (6+ / 0-)

Why is the government so tolerant of people like this who flout its authority and use threats of violence to avoid paying their bills?

What is it about being a Western rural conservative that seems to entitle a person in this country to special treatment by the government? If it were anyone else, e.g. a normal person living in the city or the suburbs who owed back taxes or whatever, they would just have their property seized and would be summarily arrested if they put up any resistance at all.

As for the "militia" members who back up these scofflaws with firearms and threats of violence, why aren't they simply arrested for sedition or treason or disturbing the peace or obstruction of justice? I'm sure there are various possible crimes under which they could be arrested and put in jail -- yet most of the time they are not. Instead, they are allowed to terrorize government officials.

So, I guess what I'm wondering is, in this age when "terrorism" is such a big issue, why are some Americans allowed to get away with things that fit that description? Why is the government afraid to enforce its own laws, against a particular type of people? They are not afraid to come down with the full force of the law on everyone else, so what is it about Western gun-toting conservatives that uniquely seems to get the government quaking in its boots and afraid to act like, well, a government?

The most serious problem in American politics today is that people with wrong ideas are uncompromising, and people with good ideas are submissive and unwilling to fight. Change that, and we might have a real democracy again.

    •  It's very frustrating (8+ / 0-)

however, asset forfeiture, liens, etc are a prudent approach to dealing with this as with the Freemen. Of course the govt would prevail in a shoot-out, but the probability that some BLM or local law enforcement would be killed is high, and wisely their safety is a primary consideration. We tend to see in this something akin to a hostage situation with an armed lunatic or terrorist (which he is, in truth) but it's ultimately about property and debt. He's a crook with a bunch of gullible friends. It's not worth pushing for a show-down that ends in a burning compound and dead people on both sides.

Now, if we could just get LEOs to quit shooting mentally ill people for sleeping illegally in campgrounds, people being outside while brown, etc.

the fed government with the support of many many of these conservative low/no government horn blowers do see the fed authority to send our men/women to wage war without regard to loss of life or mutilation and devastation brought on civilians in those areas....

Our men/women deserve the same primary consideration, if we choose to be a humane and balanced minded country, as we market ourselves

Interestingly shameful the rating system of what/who is to be valued. Incredibly concerning to me is the factors often seem to be driven by how much money can be gained and seem the indiscriminate of damage done.

I certainly agree the violence and unjustness is more often expressed in state and local levels. Would the feds come to rescue citizens from these injustices.  Would the lawmakers produce some stiff laws and penalty?

        I've not yet seen it..

Thanks for writing this diary, it was enlightening for me as I was likely too young or out of touch when the past situations took place!

      •  I know you're being facetious, but I will answer (0+ / 0-)

        the question for the record.

Basically, they fear white voters will become turned off by 24 hour news coverage of white criminals being arrested by the Federal Govt.  Combine that with latent fears of a Black President, and it's enough to sway elections.

the offense on the federal level is small , the amount he owes isn't much in federal terms . bundy can make his big man stance but the fed is much larger and will ever so slowly roll over him . He can't run , he is held in place by his possessions . Slow but sure wins in the end .
