Seriously, the geography is very odd, with the district being dominated by the far-more-insular Staten Island portion, with the Brooklyn portion as a pretty-much powerless appendix. There's a lot of resistance to voting for a Brooklynite on Staten Island, which goes beyond party allegiance, and since the bulk of the district's population is on Staten Island, they generally get their way.

The other thing is that the Republican committee of Richmond (Staten Island) hasn't been well-organized in the past. Probably due to the arrogance that sets in when one party dominates for a long time. They are often left scrambling to field House candidates after arrests (Fossella), indictments(Grimm) and even deaths and family feuds, all occurring during active races.

it has given us both Fossella and Grimm, which is a lot of crazy in a short amount of time for one district.

sufficiently how screwed-up the Richmond County Republican Committee is. I tried to pull up some links from the 2008 race (which was won by a Dem) to give you an idea, but I couldn't find any live ones.

In both of these cases, the crazy wasn't all that obvious from the start, and I guess the RCRC doesn't vet their candidates as though they were doing oppo research, which they should.

Despite being a lazy and ineffective Congressman, Fossella was extremely popular until his personal life got exposed, and everyone expected him to sail to re-election. Grimm OTOH is far more corrupt than crazy. He's been under a cloud of suspicion almost since the day he took office. The throwing-the-reporter-off-the-balcony thing was just the icing on the cake. His campaign-finance strategy is what's really taking him down.

Fossella was just a hypocrite who knocked up a girl he was having an affair with who wasn't his wife.  Something which happens more often than any of us would like.  And to his credit he did have the decency to make sure the kid was looked after and provided for.  Of course keeping all this from his wife and the public helped create a huge spectacle which brought his career to a grinding halt.

Vito was chosen (starting at the local level) because he was part of Molinari's plan to take over the borough.  His family was BIG in the Staten Island Democratic Party with his uncle previously serving as a City Councilman and his father being on the Executive Committee of the Democratic Party.

He was young, attractive, well spoken with a family pedigree in the Staten Island Democratic Party going back to at least his great-grandfather Congressman James O'Leary.

Michael Grimm was someone Guy Molinari dug up because he was angry at the local party and decided to go against the guy they (and the national republicans at the time) were backing, Michael Allegretti.  He was probably some guy Guy had mutual business dealings with.  He was a guy from Queens plucked out of nowhere.

But the common thread is Guy Molinari who has "questionable ethics" as his middle name.
