And I talked about an additional point about how we speak out. And that how we speak matters  Different point.  Nothing could be simpler

    •  How we speak out will vary by circumstance. (3+ / 0-)

Not every opportunity to speak out is going to be exactly like the last. We're all smart enough, thanks, to gauge a situation and decide what would work best in that situation with that person (or people). One size DOES NOT fit all.

...just stop responding to people like that.  They want a fight, not a discussion.  Let them get it from someone else, and they'll either get one or get tired of not getting the negative attention they seek.

You can't discuss something with someone who is wrong out of "righteousness" rather than misinformation or ignorance/naivety.

      •  Nonviolence is a core value for me (0+ / 0-)

So while one size does not fit all, there are certain principles that do always apply.  More recently I think I have decided to speak up for these.  I want to bring myself and other around to the idea that we are all better off when we speak with wisdom and kindness and firmness rather than out of hate and anger.   Yes, anger is natural enough but it is better for it to motivate action than to have it lead to lashing out and nastiness.   Many here have said the same thing

This is not jut better for the person to whom it is directed, it is also better for the speaker.  If we create a more peaceful culture here we will all be better off
