  •  And more so, I think we are ALL sometimes both. (3+ / 0-)

I think it's ridiculous to say "this is how to engage people very time" as if every situation is identical.

I think we're all smart enough to discern when to be a fighter and when to be a negotiator online or offline.

I don't spend a lot of time arguing with liberals of any stripe, to be quite honest. But then, I haven't been around here lately. I don't like pie fights. I don't do pie fights. I never did, even when I was here all day everyday...People keep talking about my diary in the context of Dkos sux/rox dynamics and that completely misses the point...and is, IMO, damned sad.

My diary is mostly about conservatives, their tactics and electoral politics at the federal, state and local levels.

that way because there's plenty of conservatives around, and not all of them are Republicans. Not all of them even call themselves conservatives.

Anybody attacking Social Security or wanting it cut, for instance, is to the right of 65-88% of the American population (depending on the poll) including around 2/3 of Republicans. Yet the Democrats who keep pushing for Social Security cuts won't call themselves conservatives, even though they're standing to the right of 2/3 of today's Republican voters, which is pretty effing scary territory to stand in, if you ask me. "I'm moderate," they say. "I'm a pragmatist." "This is just reality." "I'm a centrist." "I'm fiscally responsible."

Interestingly, these "fiscally responsible" people often don't have a problem with keeping a military option on the table with regard to Iran, which would be quite expensive, nor do they have a problem with sending an aid package to the Ukraine. They often are quite happy handing the security sector pretty much anything they damned well please. Spending isn't spending unless it's domestic non-security spending. Which pretty much tells you everything you need to know.

The provenance of such views is Republican, and within my adult lifetime, if only just barely, these views were understood to be conservative, not "moderate," "centrist," "pragmatic," but conservative.

That's why the Rox/Sux thing is coming into play.

Sure once I was young and impulsive, I wore every conceivable pin. Even went to socialist meetings, learned all the old union hymns. Ah, but I've grown older and wiser. And that's why I'm turning you in.
