  •  I don't know which sacrament is the (8+ / 0-)

    holiest but I can remember teachings about how you have to be baptized to get into Heaven (one of the reasons I forsook the Catholic Church) so it's definitely essential.

    OT.  A number of years ago I learned that a friend of mine had been baptized not long before she died.  Despite my agnostic feelings about God and religion, I found that enormously comforting.

      absolute surety of getting into heaven, the catcher being that pesky pre-death part
      but part was the belief that sins committed after babtism could only be burned away.

      ...might have been baptized 3-4 times as a baby.

      When he was born, our family was part of a Methodist church, and he got baptized as a baby into that tradition.

      But my dad's family was Irish Catholic and rather traditional about their faith, so we suspect that at least one, if not two or three, of the older women in his family ducked into the bathroom with the baby and gave him a quick emergency Catholic baptism, just to make sure he was covered.
