  •  People like to blame teachers (13+ / 0-)

because it takes the focus off themselves.

I am proud to have teachers (college professors, in fact LIBERAL ARTS college professors) as parents, who raised me from infancy to adulthood. They always put their priorities on the young minds entrusted to their care, both their own two sons and the thousands of students whom they instructed and mentored over their careers.

So the whole blame-the-teachers bullshit is a sore spot for me. Particularly in our primary and secondary schools. Many of these kids are brought to school in such a condition that teachers' focus must be not so much on enriching them as salvaging them, with few resources and fewer parents willing to actively participate in that process, along with "teach to the test" directives from administrators and politicians which necessitates teaching material counter to the goals of either enriching or salvaging. And every student who slips through the cracks is blamed upon the teacher.

All, he says conspiratorially, so that the Michelle Rhee's of the world can siphon students and tax dollars away into a for-profit educational system.

    •  It pisses me off. (5+ / 0-)

Teachers are some of my favorite people on this planet, and its high time they are respected for the service they perform for this society.

      •  Not just service. That $800 bucks is an investment (3+ / 0-)

in the future and cheap at five times the price.

Ask some loudmouth like that what those kids would be doing if they weren't all in school. Burglarizing his house, maybe? And what jobs he thinks they might get to subsidize his Social Security when he retires if they don't get through high school. Put it terms of investment and cheaper than the alternatives, (same $$'s to house a jailbird as send'em to Harvard, right?), that might slow them down a little.

Thanks for standing up, rexy, and glad midterms are over. :-)
