  •  I live in the SF bay area, just north of the heart (6+ / 0-)

of Silicon Valley. Texas does a fair amount of advertising here to encourage executives to think about Texas as a place to expand or re-locate. Texas is a very business friendly state, with significantly lower costs to operate than CA. As someone who works with startups I see them moving manufacturing to other states or offshore rather than CA because of environmental and operating costs. The headquarters and R&D stay here, but once they move past pilot scale production, the scale up is rarely in CA. California is a very difficult, and expensive, place to be a manufacturer.

technical manufacturing company (privately-held) for five or six decades in SoCal. Its products present in ships, aircraft, missiles, spacecraft, and probably Prius's too (Priusii?).
Of course, it is primarily defense related, and has used a largely (illegal) Hispanic production workforce, two major competitive advantages vis a vis other sectors and states.
