  •  Every Democratic candidate in 2014 should run (9+ / 0-)

on two simple issues: raising and keep raising the minimum wage until it's a living wage and solving climate change. Every other issue is just background noise.

support those two issues to the point where it is willing to piss off its major donors (who happen to be much the same as the GOP big donors).

      And it doesn't.

The Dem Party keeps SAYING all the time that the public overwhelmingly supports the Dem position on nearly all issues.  But the sad reality is that the party does not actually BELIEVE that--if it did, it would RUN on those issues and positions, and win elections.

But it doesn't. We've seen it on every issue from regulating banks to public option health care to immigration reform to a REAL minimum wage---the public says it wants one thing, and the Dems instead offer a watered-down weak-tea version which it hopes will keep the unwashed masses mildly satisfied (after all, the other side is even worse !!!) while not being too offensive to its corporate donors.

Then the party wonders why nobody wants to vote for it.

      (sigh)

In the end, reality always wins.

Begich has come out for expanding Social Security, and looks where he's at.

At best, ACA has more or less been neutralized. It drives wingnuts to the polls, not progressives. Raising the minimum wage isn't enough, the White House and the party leadership need to throw out some red meat, or be smart like Begich.

of important issues with American voters.

While polling on raising minimum wage nearly always gets 75% of higher approval, it is never listed as one of the important issues to Americans or as a fix for the economy.

Jobs and the bad economy are consistently the top concern of American voters.

Relatively few Americans mention the minimum wage as the best way to fix the U.S. economy, instead focusing on job creation and tax cuts.
neither Democrats nor Republicans classify the environment as a top priority for the president and Congress. The environment is tied for the seventh-highest-rated priority -- out of a list of issues -- among Democrats, while it is near the bottom of the list among Republicans.

you have to initiate appeal in areas where we dominate.
