When journalist Matt Phillips of the Quartz news commentary website asked Gilens about the accuracy of the media’s use of oligarchy to describe the report’s conclusions, the professor replied, “It’s not an unfair characterization.” But, upon further consideration, he added, “It’s a little bit alarmist.”

please, let us have nicer euphemisms. And my nose is also a smelling device.

    •  You miss the point. I didn't give any (0+ / 0-)

euphemisms.  It simply mischaracterizes the study to claim it announces the U.S. is an oligarchy, when it didn't say that.  That kind of mischaracterization undercuts an extremely important argument.

      •  what important argument are we missing? (0+ / 0-)

what is economic elite domination? Please tell what we are missing oh Timaeus?

        •  Why so snide? You're reading too fast or (0+ / 0-)

I personally think it's appropriate to call the United States an oligarchy.  I'd say it's even a fascist oligarchy.

But the authors of that particular study deliberately avoided that term.

          What's your problem with that?

          •  I did not think I was snide, a bit (0+ / 0-)

argumentative perhaps. I think the "economic elite domination" is code for oligarchy. I think we should not pretend they avoided it for their own reasons. Professors. Love em or leave em.

It do believe it is code for oligarchy. Don't you?

            •  No, I think Gilens is serious that they're (1+ / 0-)

talking about a different thing.  It's not just a professor being timid.

As far as I can tell, doesn't have a search feature, so I couldn't retrieve the interview.

But if I remember correctly, he said that oligarchy typically means a small group that dominates everything.  He thinks the economic elite that dominates the very large United States is larger and more complicated than a typical oligarchy.

But there's no doubt that the concepts are close.
