  •  it's partly individualism (6+ / 0-)

One of the characteristics of the left is individualism: we assume that we are each responsible for ourselves: this makes it difficult to get a big tent together, but at the same time, we don't feel compelled to embrace idiots and assholes on the left.  The right has always had a very low tolerance for dissent.

    •  It's also a rejection of collectivism. (4+ / 0-)

We are individually responsible for working for the common good. The libertarian right rejects that responsibility. The government is the enemy. It's "I've got mine; FU."

This goes to the heart of the eternal tug and pull on what the proper role of government is.

There is no overriding answer to this, and the pendulum has swung back and forth throughout American history.  I reject both of these at their extreme, and my definition of balance varies according to what specific government function we are talking about.

My answer on, say, air pollution regulation will differ from one on, say, NSA or legislating "proper" health care for women.

In my dream world, someday this country can have an honest discussion about this issue, but I don't live in a dream world.

The rapidity of change in today's world renders many folks unable to cope, and their response is often to run to one of the extremes.  As someone stated above, real emotional intelligence is needed to filter all this change and respond in a rational matter.  But most of the RWNJ are saying:  "Stop the world!  I want to get off!"
