Neoconservative strategy depends heavily on the fact that once an urban legend or factoid or conspiracy theory takes root in the public consciousness, it's there forever. It doesn't matter how many times it's disproven, you'll always have a certain number of people who for reasons of their own will defiantly insist that it's true because, just, they just KNOW it's true and nothing you can say to them and no amount of well-sourced debunkings of that belief you can show them is ever going to change their minds. So when Sarah Palin and Cliven Bundy are exposed as inept con artists, that may matter to us, but it won't make any difference to the people they've conned because their egos are so dependent on continuing to believe. In fact, it might be dangerous if they were forced to face the truth, because they'd undergo a psychological decompensation they weren't ready for. Fortunately, we know that roughly one-fifth to three-quarters of Americans aren't like that and are capable of being reasoned with. So we need to keep putting the truth out there and debunking the Palins and Bundys for the sake of the reasonable majority.

We know it attracts chronic underachievers, and that is a big basket that includes many people with mental problems.  Mostly we know that just from the history of mass movements.  Revolutions occur when a society deprives energetic young people of opportunities for productive work.

The sense of inferiority (well actual inferiority)  is compensated by a theatrical display of mock superiority, both moral and intellectual.

Men are so necessarily mad, that not to be mad would amount to another form of madness. -Pascal
