    The last new coal-fired power plant to be constructed in the U.S. (Prairie State Generating Station) was so over budget, that it effectively killed plans for new coal-fired power plants at other locations.

    And large numbers of power plants in the U.S. (both coal and nuclear) are beyond their design lives. They will be shut down as the market (which includes regulatory considerations) dictates.

      it will be a long time from now until we stop burning coal.

      Ken Ward Jr. writes in The Coal Tattoo about how the narrative of the war on coal has been manipulating West Virginians into becoming anti-government and pro-corporate coal to their own cost.

      He cites a 1995 study that gave about 20 years until coal began to run out.  

      Just look at what the U.S. Bureau of Mines was projecting for Boone County’s coal industry way back in 1995, when agency researchers projected that the area would be able to sustain coal-mining for only another 20 years:
