that there is any interim Ukrainian government - looks like a failed state

    •  It's a very weak government, (3+ / 0-)

with only provisional control over a weak military. US State Department is putting all its eggs into a basket with a faulty bottom.

a sizeable portion of the US Congress is at least willing to consider dumping weapons into this morass.  Which, given the failing, or maybe failed is more accurate, nature of the Ukrainian state, is likely to bleed out among the warring factions in the west of the country.

          of spreading some more democracy.

          •  There will be no US or EU troops in Ukraine. That (1+ / 0-)

seems to be the biggest fear driving this bizarre phenomenon where I actually see so-called liberals apologizing for Putin. They seem to think if they praise him enough and trash the US, EU, and Ukraine that it will somehow create peace. It will actually just embolden Putin to invade; not that we could or should try to stop him militarially. But, honestly, stop with the Putin worship. We're not invading anything. Putin is. And, despite the conspiracy theories, we didn't cause this. The biggest cause was Putin's puppet Yanukovich.

            •  If we so-called liberals stopped apologizing (0+ / 0-)

for Putin, would we get to be real liberals again? Would we have to apologize for Yats and Yarosh too, or could we just kind of forget about them?

and repeating his propaganda would be a good first step toward being a Liberal. Few people would puts Yatsenyuk, who's called "the rabbit," due to his resemblance to a character in the Russian version of Winnie the Poo, in the same category with Putin. Attempts to demonize him seem a bit off base. Recall that he had already been offered the PM position by Yanukovich before he fled. He didn't just come in guns a blazing and declare himself in office the way the separatists have. Yarosh is a largely irrelevant figure, who is in open conflict with the government and is on the run over various violations, including weapons charges. His group is not even an acknowledged political party and is not part of the government. He only took over Right Sektor when the previous leader was killed in a gun battle with the police. His group has only been further marginalized by the interim government, contradicting Putin's propaganda narrative that the far right is running everything. In fact, the government has been in several tense standoffs with them, trying to force them out of buildings they are occupying. So, the attempt to link them to the government doesn't hold water. Yarosh has been turned into a boogie man figure, with Russian media claiming his business card shows up wherever there is trouble. This is absurd propaganda.

    •  Putin is trying to stir up enough chaos to create (0+ / 0-)

a failed state and then invade to stop the chaos he created.
