Shavuot is one day in Israel or among Reform and Reconstructionist Jews in the Diaspora.  Two days among Orthodox and Conservative Jews in the Diaspora.

The 33rd day of the Omer, Lag B'Omer, is a happy day but why we observe it is unclear.  I was thinking of doing a diary of what I think is the actual reason - the dedication of the construction project for the Third Temple by the Emperor Julian the Apostate - there is some evidence to support this which I can discuss if anyone is interested.  Obviously the construction project didn't get very far.
