    Howard Zinn examined this in his People's History of the United States. Institutional racism (particularly anti-miscegenation laws) was enacted specifically to keep working-class blacks & whites from allying with each other against the moneyed class.  Instead, by incentivizing a racist worldview, the wealthy were able to bribe lower-class whites into buying into an economic system that didn't really benefit them but gave them slightly better outcomes than the black undercaste.
