A lot of the jobs are in the energy industry, and well paying.   Houston, for one, is BOOMING right now -- lots and lots of people doing very very well.  Lots of housing construction.  Lots of STEM type jobs.

Google "Houston Booming" or "Houston economic boom."

It's largely created by jobs in the energy sector, not things like service industry jobs.

been really booming for even longer and to a greater degree than Houston.
I've been talking this boom up around here for a long time. When the rest of the country was cratering economically, I was urging people to come down and get a job. We barely slowed down for a few beats.
Places like San Antonio, Corpus, Austin, even the Valley, have expanded so effen much it's hard for an oldtimer like me to even comprehend. And I've traveled everywhere, man (old C&W song); and observed such things closely, since my career was loosely tied to 'growth'.

Effectively whole new 'cities' have been created in the last decade and a half (many towns and cities have doubled and tripled in size/pop; compare this to much of the rest of the country).
