I grew up not so far from you. It sounds as though I'm a few years younger. I was a fan of the Green Hornet and Ernie Harwell. And I read at least some of the James Bond books (hand me downs from older siblings) at about age 11 or 12. (In fact, I've read some of them in recent years again. Wasn't impressed, mostly. But "Casino Royale" actually was a pretty good story. Worth re-visiting, if you get the time.)

Then after high school I spent a few years in Ann Arbor. Still one of my favorite places on Earth.

sophisticated of a story than a lot of the others.  Interesting that it was the first book!

But Bond was definitely pulp fiction and not high brow stuff, and that was perfect for where I was at at age 11 or 12.  I was also reading pulp sci-fi like Edgar Rice Burroughs Fighting Man from Mars series.

Agree with you that Ann Arbor is a very cool place, tho after 35 years in Los Angeles, it seems a little bit white bread compared to the multi-racial, multi-cultural city I live in now.
