    (you know, Pilgrims and Thnksgiving and all that), the usual was done with the lands that were given them by a king who didn't own the land he gave them:

    Lots were given out to this and that settler.

    As the colony grew, and folks moved away from the central settlement, lots became abandoned.  At that point, "takings" (eminent domain) law was imported into the law, and those lots were "taken" for public use.

    Voila: the town center, or "green," one sees in the pretty photos of New England towns.
