I think this -- at the moment -- is their real target. They hate public goods. Public museums, public libraries, public parks, and yes -- public zoos. Although is not free to get in (as far as I know) it is a community place centered on family and learning, and not profits -- which is what I think they'd prefer.

I go maybe once every 4 or 5 years, and spend more on the gas to get there and back than I do on parking and admission, but you do have to pay to get in.

What I said might have been confusing as I didn't type it correctly :P

I meant to indicate before that I do agree with you. Going to the Columbus Zoo absolutely is not free. Which is all the more funny, because so much revenue comes in from capitalistic profits, and only a fraction comes from public levies.

I'm trying to grasp why the public good is so poisonous to the right wing. :(

Lots of folks have a valid objection to zoos, but the Columbus Zoo in particular, as well as San Diego and a few others, are a public good. They deserve our whole-hearted protection and support.

Theoretically, the Zoo's research functions are state supported, while admissions pay for making the animals "display-worthy". Neither of those are free, but both are public goods, especially while we seem intent on destroying natural habitat wherever we can.
