  •  GE's new turbines with batteries even better (6+ / 0-)

GE has new turbines that incorporate energy storage batteries.  They aren't intended to supply power when the blades aren't turning, but to level out minor minute to minute fluctuations that can be a massive problem on the scale of an entire wind farm.  The batteries help the turbine capture more peak power and deliver a more constant average power.  All better for tying into the grid.

I've read for a long time that 30%-50% is the barrier for renewables before the grid goes unstable.  Very good to hear that barrier isn't as stiff as it seemed.

    •  The experience in Europe was ... (6+ / 0-)

... that as electricity suppliers encountered and solved the problems with integrating greater amounts of renewable energy, the predicted upper threshold on how much could be integrated kept rising.

The same seems to be happening in Colorado.

      •  So far yes, NREL & NAS say 20% without (1+ / 0-)

any grid work or storage systems.

Deploy HVDC and some storage, and we'll be at 40% renewables around 2030.

        •  I had thought that was with modest grid work? (1+ / 0-)

It may be that the modest grid work that they originally projected as being required is already on track, so it would be 20% with no further grid work.

In their modelling, the distributed national grid does indeed kick in as a requirement above the 20% level.

          •  IIRC no grid work 2 get 2 20% (0+ / 0-)

            •  The one I got 20 by 2030 with modest ... (0+ / 0-)

... grid work was this one, the NREL 2008 study.

Development of 293 GW of new wind capacity would require expanding the U.S. transmission grid in a manner that not only accesses the best wind resource regions of the country but also relieves current congestion on the grid, including new transmission lines to deliver wind power to electricity consumers. •  My wish is HVDC from "Green Bay to LA". (1+ / 0-)

When I speak to people I use that phrase

Detroit to NY, doesnt sound as cool. But being able to move power around 1000's of miles at a 4% savings compared to AC lines is a sweet deal just to start.
