    To which I lent support with my comment regarding the uselessness of the standardized tests for measuring anything related to music.

    All of which is in a diary about a music teacher being fired for not passing a standardized algebra test, unrelated to her music teaching.

    I think it's you who is clearly off topic.

      Does not mean standardized test. Is that where we're not communicating?

      The comment before that was about physical changes in the brain made by music. That's what I was responding to.

        Is about the misapplication of standardized tests.

        All your comments were in support of "testing what we can test."

        When you (apparently) shifted your meaning from standardized tests to individual tests, you neither explicitly mentioned, nor implied such a shift had occurred, but instead used language ("So we wrote standards to address the important things we can check learning for") that continued to imply you were supporting the standardized tests.

        But, of course, while those standards do test something (poverty level), they do not test the thing being discussed in this diary or in this thread (the ability to teach and/or learn music).

        To repeat zenbassoon: You want to assess a music teacher, create a music assessment. Not a math and ELA assessment.

          In the one part I was talking about assessment, I was really talking about why organizations such as NAFME and ASTA chose the standards they did. Because good standards need to have the possibility of being assessed. You can't assess emotional response, for example. Assessment is a normal function in the classroom. So: you guys are coming up with stuff, but it doesn't really have anything to do with what I was talking about to a completely different person.

          Standards exist independent of standardized tests. That MAY be where you were getting sideways.
