  •  Hi Neighbor! (11+ / 0-)

My pleasure. I just emailed the following to the entire legislature.

Dear members of the Dutchess County Legislature,

As I am sure most of you know, the terms "ape" and "monkey" have been used, when directed toward persons of color, and specifically toward African Americans, to express a racist attitude, one which in effect expresses a view of African-Americans as "subhuman." It is a terrible slur that carries with it a very bad history.

That is why, when I read earlier today that Dutchess County Comptroller, James Coughlan, used it as a way of dismissing the commentary of Melissa Harris-Perry, a black scholar and news commentator, I was truly horrified. (news link) This sort of language should not be uttered by any elected officials. As Dutchess County legislators, you all have the obligation to speak out against racism by county officials. If you do, I will commend you for this. So please do! If you dismiss this as no big deal, or try to dismiss this as "political correctness" or as a "political' campaign against Coughlan by his opponents, that will tell me that you are, in effect, supporting racism. Please don't do that.

We need a government that represents all of Dutchess County, in all of its diversity. That is why I am asking you to demand that James Coughlan resign. His words make him unfit for service to our fine county.

I look forward to hearing back from any of you who may wish to contact me about this. Thank you for your service to Dutchess County.

I'm in Beacon, by the way

    •  I got a reply (13+ / 0-)

from Micki Strawinski Here is what she wrote

      Dear Mr. Conroy -

I share in your horror over the homophobic and racist remarks by the Comptoller.

To quote Chaucer: Many a true word is spoken (or in this case "tweeted") in jest.

It is an insult to the diverse people that he was elected to represent and is an embarrassment to the county at the very least and bigoted and hateful at worst.   This kind of behavior from a  public servant must not be tolerated without some kind of reprimand.

I have a call into the Association of Towns Attorney to find out what, if any, action can be taken by the Legislature whether it be to call for his resignation or censure him.

      Sincerely,

I hope to hear back from more of these Reps

      •  Excellent. (5+ / 0-)

Please let us know if they take any kind of action against him.  I'm so sick of this, and glad to see, if only one person at a time (meaning you and your letter), that these matters are handled appropriately.  We can't have public servants who hate the public.  We just can't.  And only we can stop it by refusing once and for all to tolerate it.

The GOP will destroy anything they can't own.

      •  Your Letter ... (0+ / 0-)

... is very well written.  It not only deserved a response, you made it quite easy for Ms. Strawinski to do so.

Thank you for this [even though I reside in 'upstate ny'].
