  •  I can't tell you how many times lately people (7+ / 0-)

at the book clubs I attend make damning comments about lazy welfare moochers. It's discouraging. You'd think people who loved to read would be more intelligent and have open minds.

    •  And I retort (11+ / 0-)

"when I hear you complain about the wealthy moochers (GE paid no income taxes and got subsidies) as much as I hear you complain about poor people, I will listen.  Until then, please pass the butter!"

    •  They have been brainwashed for decades (5+ / 0-)

That is the problem. I was somewhat surprised myself when I looked it up and found out that only four percent of the population is on it. And it was reformed back when Clinton was Prez. Work and/or school requirements and a lifetime limit of five years. But you really would not know those things unless you do the research. And not all people who are on Welfare are single mothers either. There are families that have both parents who can't find jobs.

I suppose if I were not poor myself perhaps I would be more willing to believe the lies they tell. Because I am disabled I have more empathy towards others. That is why I decided to look up the facts of the matter, because I wondered whether they were lying or exaggerating because they lie about the poor in general.

If billionaires can afford to spend millions of dollars so that they can avoid paying taxes and fair wages, then they *can afford* to pay taxes and fair wages!

happened like 20 yrs ago. There are job training, job search, work requirements now that are strictly enforced and monitored.

Obviously these well read people never bother to understand, read about, research welfare reform.

There are no lazy people sitting around on welfare, there are very strict job training requirements and work requirements to even qualify.

There are very few exceptions to this and what they do not understand is many on welfare are working part time or even fulltime but still qualify for some benefits because of the low wages.
