  •  When I was a youngun' in Maine... (1+ / 0-)

In the 50s and early 60s we uniformly had winters with shovelable snow continuously on the ground from Thanksgiving thru March. Never had an "open" winter where you could see the ground between snows. And every year we had at least a two-week cold spell in January-Febuary which had us walking every day to school at minus 20degrees F.  Your nostrils would stick shut if you pinched 'em.  This was in East Deering, Portland, half a block in from the bay, moderated weather! Now most of the white stuff blows thru to our south, no complaints, and the temperatures rarely below zero.  And now the wimps are closing schools around the country for sub-zero days.  We used to think it was normal.  We had coats and hats and mittens back then, I guess.
Shoot, I'm old as dirt. And almost as attractive.

You should see what the kids wear around here in the winter. Granted, some people have cars and figure they don't really need coats (really! they should get stuck in a blizzard sometime) but the kids who are coming across the street will wear t-shirts when it's forty degrees, and shorts and flip flops when it's a bit warmer than forty:

and hoodies when it's in the 20s.

And then they shiver and complain about how cold it is.

Well, DUH! It's January/February above the Mason-Dixon Line!

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street. E. B. White
