    wonder if:

    “the disinclination to save in tribal societies is linked to a strong propensity for immediate consumption”
    has anything to do with the tendency for people of generational poverty to splurge on 'luxury' items when they get some extra money instead of saving it.  in that culture, if someone needs money, you have to give them money if you have it.  Otherwise, they might not help you when you are in a jam.*  I had a Han Chinese colleague who mentioned that this was true in her family (refugees from Vietnam).

    *I am probably stating this badly; look to the work of Dr. Ruby K. Payne for more/better information.
