we work on human trafficking and helped write that ILO report I linked to above.  Had I not asked her about her circumstances, I would deserve to be fired.  But it was really unsettling to be confronted by this directly, not as an analyst or service provider, but it a very practical and ethical sense, in a guesthouse in which I was staying.  I honestly don't quite know, even on a policy basis, how to deal with this sort of labor migration.  Effectively regulated, it can allow a young woman the opportunity to save a couple thousand dollars, which could set her up in business in Ethiopia.  But it's creepy and wrong the way that these women are very much servants, with the heritage of slavery in the recent past in the Middle East, and all the huge class and racial differences that are so starkly on display.
