He won't even answer basic policy questions. Think he'd say if he had a role? Would someone as senior as him know about the major deals the corporation was involved in? Can't tell yet, but we can tell that he's a high ranking executive for a corporation that pulls this kind of scam.

you could certainly pin this one on him. But someone who is running middle market in the US, this seems like a stretch to me. If I were him I wouldn't talk about this either. It's a no win for him.

He's secretive and running on literally "I"m not Mitt Romney". Republicans will get right away that this undercuts his campaign themes.

        •  What are his campaign themes? (0+ / 0-)

and that he's not Mitt Romney. Because Lazard is secretive and gets into the same sort of crap as Bain, but somehow with less attention even though it's bigger. I attribute that to not have an executive running for president, merely the Senate, though he's regarded as Franken's most serious challenger because he's wealthy enough to self-fund. Lazard is bigger than Bain, and McFadden is high up enough that even without being directly involved in what other units are doing, he might know. He also refuses to answer questions on anything at all, not just Lazard, but routine policy stuff. Big mysterious financial corporation pulling huge scams and he won't talk take questions from anyone. Doesn't that sound to you like something that should be dug into. This is the article I linked to in the post at "he's not Mitt Romney!", http://left.mn/...

While there may be a small amount of overlap they are in completely different sectors of the capital markets, and with organizational structures and funds under management legally organized in a different fashion. He ISN'T Mitt Romney because he is in a completely different business.

            •  I don't see how his firm being involved as an (0+ / 0-)

adviser to the UK government on the spinout of the Mail and  also being an investor in the spinout in any ways taints his business experience theme. They aren't related.

Were you against tying Mitt Romney to Bain too?

                •  Given that Romney had been gone from Bain (0+ / 0-)

Capital for more than twenty years, and that most of the information about Bain floating around the Internet was misleading, if not factually incorrect, I thought on that issue Romney was not fairly treated. And I wrote many unpopular comments to that effect here at DKOS. I may be the only person at DKOS who has had a chance to look under the tent at every deal in the history of Bain Capital, see what role and investment BC made, and how they performed. Both Romney and his firm were unfairly characterized. However, Romney did a very poor job of defending his experience and the investments that BC had made, both the ones that did well, and those that didn't.

However, I think the Obama campaign did a masterful job of demonizing Romney and Bain Capital, and that was an important part of their campaign strategy. A tip of the cap to them for their political savvy.

                  •  I can understand you felt unpopular (0+ / 0-)

Maybe even under siege, though I can't defend you on factual grounds. He didn't run Bain while he was governor, but he ran it during the years it acquired its sour reputation. The Obama campaign didn't create that reputation. Nor was it unfair to use it against Romney, because nearly pretended he hadn't been governor and ran on his Bain experience. That's where the comparison is fair to this guy I very much don't want to become my senator. McFadden has no policy background and won't answer policy questions, but wants to be elected because of his Lazard background. That makes it entirely relevant to ask what Lazard has done, and what he knew about it. Would you really guess that the Royal Mail was a one-off, and not a way of doing business?

thoughtful opinion. I know a lot about Bain Capital.

While the Obama campaign was throwing tons of dirt on Mitt Romney, the actual real time Bain Capital managing partner, Steve Pagliuca, was an Obama bundler, and had run for the Democratic US Senate nomination against Martha Coakley. While the Democrats were asking Romney, who hadn't worked at BC for twenty years, to intervene at some BC portfolio companies who were offshoring jobs, or closing plants, no one suggested the President phone the guy who was one of his top fund raisers in New England, who was actually calling the shots. So to me it was all optics, and it worked.
