    Thanks for the reminder that Red-winged Blackbirds are such wonderful birds. How fun to be in the right place at the right time to be in the middle of a murmurating flock! I'm sure it was quite loud. Question - have you seen Rusty Blackbirds at Yolo? That would be pretty cool.

    Some of you may have read about the SF Bay area tree trimming incident in which a Black-crowned Night Heron rookery was disrupted, possibly with some of the chicks ending up in the wood chipper. Well, whatever the circumstances of the original incident, the owner seems contrite and has donated funds for the rehab of the rescued chicks. Take away message:

    [International Bird Rescue] Center manager Michelle Bellizzi also gave him a stern lesson on when to trim trees: winter only.

    "If you want to discourage birds from nesting, trim the bejesus out of your trees in the winter," she said. "That way it'll be a real unattractive place for them in the springtime and they'll go somewhere else."
