Tom Hawk (D-Manhattan) was a former State Rep. who ran for Senate as insurance in case the incumbent, a moderate Republican, lost the primary.  Hawk said he'd stand down if the incumbent won the primary.  Well, the R lost his primary and Hawk picked up the seat for the Democrats.

We lost one in the NW corner (an appointee after the incumbent was brought into some state court) and picked up one in suburban Wyandotte County, where Dem Pat Pettey defeated a party-switcher.  But I recall that there was another Dem loss in Leavenworth Co. and yet Dems netted one Senate seat overall.  What was the other one...

We picked up two seats, with Hawk and Pat Pettey, who defeated a Dem party switcher. But we did lose another seat in Leavenworth.

So Hawk's is the only seat we won just because of the conservative revolt against the moderates, although we did come within 250 votes of another, Jean Schodorf's seat.

because I wrote a diary on KS-St. Senate redistricting way back when and I did my homework on the candidates for both sides.

I looked it up, Romney carried Hawk's seat 58-39.  Yet Hawk managed to win it by 1.5%.  Fun fact, the moderate GOP incumbent faced two primary challengers that year and almost came in third place.  Nice going Republicans.
